Mackinac Island
Tuesday mid morning, we headed up to Mackinaw City where we spent the night before heading out to the Island Wednesday morning. Logan handled the 5-hour drive up with a minimum of fuss. We were very proud! We made one stop at a rest area to have snacks and let Logan run around and enjoy the grass. Logan loves the outdoors and it was important for him to use up some energy. Our second stop en route was at Ciocia's house in Vanderbilt, which is by Gaylord. We stopped to see Dziadz, who is not doing too well apparently. Dziadz turned 94 last April 18. He was doing reasonably well since moving in with Ciocia, but he has been sick and losing a lot of weight recently. I thought that, while thin, he seemed to be okay for the very short time we were there visiting. Regardless, it was wonderful to see Dziadz and Ciocia. Dziadz got to meet his great grandson Logan for the first time!!! :)
After the visit, it was 45 minutes more in the car until we hit Mackinaw City. We checked in, ate some dinner, and perused the bridge-front park before turning in for the evening. Logan even managed okay in the hotel room. The next day, we were off to Mackinac Island for a day of fun. We started our day by eating a tasty breakfast at the Pancake Chef, a favorite restaurant of mine. Then we were off to the Shepler's Ferry dock. Logan even got his own "infant" ticket, which was free but they like to count everyone on board. We got on board the ferry shortly thereafter, and Logan enjoyed his first ferry ride. :)
After arriving on the Island, we checked into our hotel, and then quickly rented bikes for the 8-mile trek around the island. We rented a Burley (which is a little stand-alone caboose that pulls behind a bike) for Logan. He seemed to enjoy it, but shortly after we took off, Logan fell asleep!!! ;D He proceeded to nap for the full circumference. We decided not to wake him by seeing any of the sights along the way. There will be time enough for that in the future, and a grumpy Logan is no fun.
After our bike ride, we met back up with Grandma and Grandpa for a fun day of putzing around. We checked out a few shops, let Logan play in the park below the fort, and later the playground by the school. Later we took a nap, had dinner, and went to the fireworks that were shot by the Iriquois beach. Unfortunately, there was a lot of fog, so the fireworks display was not as nice as it could have been, but we still enjoyed it. Logan did well; he did not seem scared of the fireworks' noise of lights. Mostly, Logan enjoyed playing in the rocks on the beach!!!
Thursday morning, we were back on the road again. Logan didn't do quite as well on the way home, but overall he was a champ. He fussed maybe 30 minutes or so near the end before he fell asleep. On the way home from Mackinac Island, we stopped at McDonalds for lunch. And sadly, Logan had his first french fry. :P We (or maybe it is just me!! ;O) are trying to keep him away from junk food as long as possible. I am happy to report that he didn't like french fries much. I am sure it will change in the future, but we are happy for small blessings, as always!! Logan also tried a small bite of Big Mac. :O
