Diaper Free Before 3

Logan is teething like a mad man. It has upset his usual easy-going disposition, and the poor little guy has been a bit of a crank! :( Poor little guy! He woke up at 3am this morning, which is not usual, and his naptimes are off. At Mom's group today, Logo weighed in at 17 lbs, 6 oz. He has hit a plateau which the lactation consultant assured me is normal. :) Its not like he is starving, chowing down 10 times a day! :D

We heard some good news today - Babcia and Dziadz are coming to visit for Christmas - HURRAH!!!!! :) Hopefully, Aunt Barb will come, too, and it will be the first Christmas in forever that our side of the family will be all together!!! Logan is looking forward to seeing family! :)

I attended a free seminar at the local library today, "Diaper Free Before 3". The author of the book by the same name was very informative. Basically, since the invention of disposable diapers, the mean age for potty training has gotten older and older. The recommendations included starting potty training before 2 years old, ideally around 9-12 months assuming the child can sit up well at that time. Other hints include switching to training pants when starting training. Another plus would be to switch to cloth diapers at 6 months or so. Training consists of sitting on the baby can (the baby bjorn potty was recommended) at least every 2-3 hours, and at "transition" times such as after getting up in the morning, before bed, after meals, before leaving the house, and when switching activities. The idea is to make sure that the kid learns to go in accordance with an acceptable schedule (just like we might go to the bathroom before a long meeting or car ride) vs. waiting until the need is so urgent that an accident will result. I asked the author if she used disposables, and she said she does as she breastfeeds and its easy to get diaper rash with cloth given the amount of BMs/wet diapers generated by breastfeeding newborns. She switches to cloth diapers at 6 months. We probably won't switch that early, but maybe at 9-12 months. :O
